Our missionary partners on the Island of Hispaniola, Children of the Nations in the Dominican Republic and New Missions in Haiti, immediately responded and remain actively engaged in relief efforts for the victims of this disaster. Samaritan's Purse disaster relief arm sprang into action right away, with medical aid, food and water.
Though COTNI is focusing on the medical needs of children who were injured in Haiti’s earthquake a few weeks ago, they are also concentrating on other areas of need such as food, water, living supplies and the spiritual needs that people have in such a time of tragedy and loss. As more food and supplies are donated and shipped down to their warehouses in the Dominican Republic to be used for those in Haiti, the goal is to work through the local churches to determine where these donations need to go and where they will be best used.
The New Missions campus in Bordmer became a base camp for the U.S. Navy and Marines. The U.S. Navy Seabees have partnered with the mission organization in the demolition of buildings that were destroyed in the earthquake, and are helping to build temporary facilities. Through their mission, thousands of pallets of food and supplies for the Leogane region have been distributed. The school children are being fed and each of New Mission's schools are preparing to open soon. Temporary facilities are being constructed; school directors and teachers are in place at each location helping with this process.
In response to a growing concern for vulnerable children in Haiti, Samaritan’s Purse rushed blankets, hygiene kits, shelter materials, and more than 14 tons of emergency food to 77 homes for orphaned and abandoned children. The agency's relief teams delivered supplies to dozens of children’s homes in Port-au-Prince and surrounding areas. Orphanage directors were also able to pick up emergency food and other supplies from the Samaritan’s Purse base camp, located just outside the capital. The organization will continue to provide support for orphanages and children’s homes in Haiti as the country struggles to recover and rebuild. New requests for assistance are received daily.
Please continue to pray for the suffering people of Haiti, for the relief and rebuilding efforts, and that God's presence will be clearly seen and felt.
