What We Stand For

Our Values

Authentic Community

We value authentic community where relationships are built on honesty, cooperation, commitment and sacrificial love for one another. Everyone is welcome in Cornerstone's diverse community, where being transformed into the image of Christ is highly valued and where God's power and presence are evident.

John 13:35
"By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another."
1 Peter 2:5
"You also, like living stones are being built into a spiritual house."
1 John 3:16
"This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down His life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers."
1 Corinthians 12:13
"For we were all baptized by one Spirit into one body — and we were all given the one Spirit to drink."
Scripture +

Active Prayer

Prayer is actively promoted as our personal and corporate discipline. When combined with faith, prayer yields amazing results. Our dependence on God to do what we cannot do reminds us that with God all things are possible.

Ephesians 6:18
"Be alert and always keep on praying."
John 15:7
"If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish and it will be given you."
1 John 5:14
"This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to His will, he hears us."
Scripture +

Empowered Believers

God has given every believer a capacity to minister His grace to others. We help every Christian identify their gifts, passions and natural talents and encourage their use. The pastors are equippers — the people are the ministers who carry out the work of Jesus Christ in the church and the world.

Ephesians 4:7, 11–12
"To each one of us grace has been given… to prepare God's people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up."
1 Peter 4:10
"Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God's grace in its various forms."
Scripture +

Vibrant Worship

Our worship is creative and alive because of God's presence, and invites every believer to draw near to Him. We use worship styles of the past and present so that all generations will be brought together.

John 4:24
"God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in spirit and in truth."
Psalm 150:6
"Let everything that has breath praise the Lord."
Hebrews 13:15
"Let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise."
Scripture +

Biblical Focus

The basis of teaching, preaching and the court of final appeal for all matters of belief and Christian living is the inspired and inerrant Word of God. The entire Bible is used as our guidebook for life and living.

2 Timothy 3:16
"All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work."
Scripture +

Effective Evangelism

We consider it our mission to communicate the good news of Jesus Christ to the entire world beginning with our own local communities. We seek methods that fit the cultural context of the hearers to communicate the unchanging gospel message.

Matthew 28:19
"Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations."
1 Corinthians 9:22
"I have become all things to all men so that by all possible means I might save some. I do all this for the sake of the gospel."

Statement of Faith

What We Believe

The Bible +

We believe that God breathed out the original writings of both Old and New Testaments to the prophets and apostles by means of the Holy Spirit, Who chose the words they employed according to the personality and background of these human authors. The sixty-six books comprise the complete and errorless word of God and are the final authority in what we believe and how we are to live.

God +

We believe that there is only one true God who eternally exists as three equal persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit, who exclusively share in the work of creation, ruling the universe, redeeming lost humanity and final judgment.

Man +

We believe that man was uniquely created in the image of God; but because of Adam’s sin that image was damaged so that all human beings are now born with a sinful nature, are unable to function in moral responsibility before holy God, and need spiritual regeneration before they can become what God designed them to be.

Jesus Christ +

We believe that Jesus, the eternal Son of God, entered the human race as the holy virgin-born son of Mary. He fulfills the Old Testament prophecies of the Messiah: He was rejected by Jewish leaders, condemned by Pontius Pilate, crucified by the Romans and buried in a borrowed tomb. On the third day Jesus arose bodily from the dead, consistent with what He predicted and the Scriptures foretold. He ascended to heaven and is now seated at the right hand of the Father.

Redemption +

We believe Jesus died on the cross as a sinless substitute for sinful men of every era. We believe that salvation is a gift of God’s electing grace to all who place their faith in His Son Jesus as their Lord and Savior. Through His death, God the Father reconciled the world to Himself so that all who personally receive Jesus are eternally secure in the family of God.

The Holy Spirit +

We believe that the resurrected Jesus ascended to heaven and on the day of Pentecost sent the Holy Spirit to convince, indwell, guide, comfort and empower all who believe. The Spirit gives believers new life in Christ so that they may live godly lives and engage in love-prompted service to others in accordance with their God-given gifts and passion.

The Church +

We believe that the Church consists of all who have been regenerated by the Spirit and finds its expression as local churches, operating under the direction of Jesus as Head of His body through qualified elders. The role of all church leadership is to be servants who develop God’s people to fulfill their God-given ministry.

Ordinances +

We believe that Jesus commanded us to baptize new believers as an outward symbol of their spiritual identification with Christ's death, burial and resurrection, and it is our practice to baptize by immersion in water. Jesus also commanded all true believers to remember His death until He comes by taking the bread and the cup that symbolize His broken body and precious blood.

Satan +

We believe that Satan exists and is the originator of sin. He is the arch-enemy of God and man. He persistently seeks to counterfeit the works and truth of God. His eternal destiny is to be cast into the lake of fire forever.

God's Future Plans +

We believe that Jesus Christ will return to this earth visibly and bodily in power and great glory. He will come for His church prior to His millennial reign on earth. At the end of the millennium Satan will incite a final resurgence of evil that will be totally and finally vanquished by God, and a new heaven and new earth will be created in which perfect righteousness will eternally dwell. All human beings will be raised from the dead to face God. Believers will enjoy eternal blessedness called heaven and unbelievers will face eternal separation from God.
Our Story
"Welcome to the Church that was never supposed to be."

Welcome to the Church that was never supposed to be! In the early days of Cornerstone, consultants warned against planting a church in Long Beach, characterizing the city as too secular and resistant to the Gospel. Eight couples trusted God above that guidance however, devoting themselves to prayer, service in local schools and the preaching of God’s Word. They also invested in each other, inviting God to shape their relationships, their families and their vocations. Twenty-five years later, we rejoice in God’s faithfulness. He continues to work through those practices to sustain and energize Cornerstone Church, build this community and advance His mission locally and globally.
