Use Your Time Wisely

Summer is wonderful time. The weather is exceptional, school is out, and a lot of people go on vacation. Friends and family get together for the first time in a long time and there’s this feeling of new beginnings in the air. However, without a plan and some well thought out goals, summer can be a big waste of time.

Moses in Psalm 90:12 (ESV) asks the Lord to “teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom.” In the beginning of the Psalm, Moses reflects on the fact that the Lord is eternal, not having a beginning and never ending. He extols God for His grandeur and compares a thousand years for us as to one day for the Lord. He then compares this to our state as fallen humanity. Our lives are so short in the grand scheme of things, especially compared to God’s greatness. We are born, we live, and then we die and are forgotten.

Therefore, he asks the Lord, please teach us to number our days, so that we may gain a heart of wisdom. He asks that God would help us remember who we are and who He is. He is not saying that our lives are insignificant because our lives are short, but he is asking for God’s perspective so that we may not be so full of ourselves and our desires that we miss what God has for us.

After his request for a heart of wisdom, Moses continues by asking God to remember His people who have been suffering. In other words, He calls upon God to remember His promises to His chosen people. He asks God to fulfill His promises by saving them for His name’s sake. He asks God to show His favor on His people so that they may be about the good work that God has placed before them to do. “Let the favor of the Lord our God be upon us, and establish the work of our hands upon us; yes, establish the work of our hands!”

Ephesians 2:10 (ESV) says “for we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” Once we are saved, we are called into action. We are not to sit idly by, just waiting for Christ’s return. He has called us into His service, while we wait for His glorious return.

Summer is a wonderful time. Use your time wisely.
